A dental implant is an artificial tooth root replacement fixed in the jaw. It is made of titanium and shaped like a screw. According to the needs, a ceramic crown (artificial tooth) can be placed on the implant, or the implant can be used with other implants or teeth to support a bridge or a removable prosthesis. 

Dental implants are made of titanium, a solid and perfectly biocompatible material. A dental implant is fixed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. After a short healing period, the implant grows in the bone; this is called osseointegration. Once the implant has anchored with the jawbone, a replacement tooth (final prosthesis) can be placed.

A new material for implants is being finalized: zircon. It is already used to replace the metallic part under the crown ceramic. Benefits: it is white. Disadvantages: it is more fragile (therefore ongoing researches to improve it).

Dental implants are used to replace missing or damaged teeth, avoiding partial or complete removable prostheses (denture), or bridges that would harm healthy teeth.

Dental implants are the most natural-looking and feeling tooth replacement.They cannot be affected by carries or nerve infection. Furthermore, dental implants reduce shrinkage of patient jawbone, and therefore diminish facial wrinkles, improving facial stability. 

Implant integration (success rate) depends on the quantity and quality of the jawbones at the time of implant placement.  

• 95% for upper jaw and the back portion of the lower jaw. 

• 96-98% for the front portion of the lower jaw. 

• Smokers face a higher risk of implant failure.

Each missing tooth can be replaced by an implant-supported ceramic crown.
When all teeth are missing (patients with full denture), 4 to 6 implants supporting up to 14 teeth on each jaw offer fixed, permanent and natural looking teeth..

In case of budget constraints, a removable prosthesis can be placed on 2 implants to improve its stability (a removable implant-supported denture is much more stable).

In certain cases, a tooth can be removed and replaced instantly with an implant-supported crown. Patients can go back immediately to their daily and professional life.

Implants are usually a better solution than conventional bridges, as they avoid devitalizing healthy teeth, and diminish fracture risks.

Implants can also be used in orthodontic treatments.
Orthodontic implants are temporary mini implants made of titanium alloys, which are intended for use as anchorage during orthodontic treatments. They are not permanent. Mini-implants are installed by our iSi surgeons in close cooperation with specialized orthodontists. Once the patient’s braces are removed, the implants can be removed as well.

Dental Implant treatments have been developed more than 40 years ago by Pr Brånemark in Sweden. Since then, technology has evolved and computerized technology plays now a large role in the planning procedures of treatment, surgery and prosthesis.
